May is the month of beautiful celebrations.

Have you heard of No Mow May?

After learning about the benefits of not mowing the lawn last year, I asked the gardeners to stop mowing for the whole month of May.

They know I’m the Crazy Cat Lady, so they just shrugged and went with it.

What happened next was truly amazing.

For example, there was this large patch under the bamboo where the grass just wouldn’t grow no matter what we did. We assumed it was because the bamboo was sucking up the moisture and casting too much shade.

But after a month of not mowing, the patch filled itself in!

It turns out, letting the grass grow allows it to seed itself. It is the best way to naturally thicken the lawn and reduce weeds.

On the "before" photos you can see the dirt we covered with rugs, now filled in on the "after" photo!

Although Earth Day is in April, No Mow May is another way to celebrate Mother Earth. Last year, all kinds of other miracles happened.

The wildlife loved it. I’d never seen a field mouse in our yard before. Not only did a healthy field mouse show up, but Floofles had fun playing with it!

(Yes, the field mouse survived, and it turns out they’re great swimmers!)

I’m not a biological mom, but I am a step mom, and a feral kitty mom.

Floofles seemed to love the tall grasses last year and I’m looking forward to No Mow May this year.

After the heavy rains in February 2024, we had to rebuild the hill, which we had already rebuilt after the heavy rains of February 2023.

The new workers did an amazing job with proper drainage and a sturdier retaining wall, so it should survive future deluges. Anyway, it’s finished!

Best of all, the Floofles kitty portal is back! 😻
