No Mow May sounds like a good idea!! Great pictures too! Congratulations on reaching your big 60‼️‼️‼️

Aww thanks Anthony. You won't regret NO MOW MAYing!

Wow what a post! I hope you will extend the ban on mowing past May. Maybe every other month? I just love how nature responded.

Can’t wait to see the film.

Wishing you a happy HAPPY birthday. I hope it’s as wonderful as you. Hugs.

Thanks for the encouragement, Jena. It took me years fighting against the gardeners and my hubby about the lawn. They always mowed it all the way down to the quick, which is the worst thing you can do. Now they saw the results and have at least adjusted the mower to keep it a few inches tall. Normally they mow once a week but maybe I'll fight to make it twice a month.

The doc should be out in a week or two! I hope by Mother's Day!🥰

Put your foot down! It’s your yard and your grass!

Exactly! 😻

I do a no-mow April.

The pollinators love the dandelions, too.

I'll mow again in about 3 weeks, almost a no-mow May.

The pollinators approve.

Yes for the pollinators! So great to see you here Steve!

You as well, Lorraine. Much calmer here than Twitter.

I used to perform as The Birthday Princess in my mid-twenties. I spent many days at the Library of Congress researching birthdays around the world. Never heard of Beddian... New Yorker closed me out without paying. But I do know about the Golden birthday, just not the rest described in https://www.calendar-canada.ca/frequently-asked-questions/what-is-it-called-when-you-are-the-same-age-as-your-birth-year. I love reading your pieces like this. With so many people who follow me after being to your page or from your recommendation, I know that you are making friends all the time with every moment spent writing and posting!

Expand full comment

Lisa! You saw my sash that says "Birthday Princess"!

The New Yorker piece is pretty amazing because it's about a firefighter. That freaks me out because my new book is all about firefighters, so making the Beddian birthday connection is yet another crazy weird coincidence that happens every time I write a new novel.

I knew about the Golden Birthday but my 25th passed LONG ago. So the Beddian birthday is a nice one for us older folks. 🥰

That's so cool you made more friends from my recommendation, same for me, so many new friends from recommendations. Substack has been pretty magical that way!

I got that it was connected to firefighters, but not exactly what it was... before they closed me out. I also LOVED the video of cat and mouse. Voted for the more plain cat sketch. Love the pictures that bring your words even more alive than they are naturally, by themselves.

That video of Floofles with the field mouse was so crazy! It's like a fairy tale!

You couldn't have paid professionals to do it better!

Ha ha ha! My narration cracks me up😆

Yay! Thank you Janet, I was partial to them too. Maybe I'll make detachable ones and test them out. 😻

Smart idea! Always good tobtest it out. 👍😼

I posted it on Amazon as soon as I finished the book. I will see if I saved a copy of it. I know it went as it “thanked me” for it. I hope I have a copy…..

I love all of this! The no-mow May is so important for bees, butterflies, and all the critters we share the land with! 💕

And speaking of honoring nature and harmony, voting is the ultimate natural noxious/invasive weed control!

Happy Badass Birthday, my friend! 💗😎💙😻

OMG how did I miss making that point?

Thank you Kate.

VOTE BLUE to save Mother Nature!🌊💙

Likewise.

I don't author much in my substack space, but it seems much more controllable.

I mostly follow who I think are the leading lights in current commentary like Heather Cox-Richardson and Joyce White Vance. I like the long form - and Richardson's footnotes.

You're doing it right, Steve!

You got me reading the Beddian birthday piece, interesting stuff. Great pics, Lorraine!

Thanks Michael. It's so weird that I found it right now so much is related to my novels. Mind blown!😻

I always loved that song from “Camelot”. “It’s May! It’s May! The lusty month of May. When everything goes blissfully astray”.

Expand full comment

Oh brilliant lyrics by Frederick Loewe! Thanks for reminding me about this, Dawn. I've never seen the musical but I write a lot about Camelot and King Arthur🥰

“It’s time to do a shocking thing, or two, and try to make each day one you’ll always rue”.
