Lorraine, a year ago I said that Trump is trying to kill us. I believed it then and that certainty has only picked up steam. What I find perplexing is this: Why has no one attempted to “return the favor?”

LOL!! That's awesome Sherry. Right? It's self defense at this point!

My thoughts, exactly, Lorraine. Great piece, by the way.

I hope I am doing this correctly. Hi, Silverwolf501, I recognize you as a Palmer Report reader. I was guided here by wonderful Lorraine who is helping me build my substack. I just subscribed to you. and would be honored if you’d subscribe. I’m new at this, and only created it a couple of days ago! I have several articles up including one about how I came to find Palmer Report!

I just love floofles she’s adorable 🥰💕

Ha! The largest bunch of lunatics in one place. It's like a circular firing squad, Doreen!

Haha!! It definitely is!

She is the sweetest Zen Master, Jay. Every time she has a breakthrough, she pulls all the way back again. Although she's been here every night lounging around living the good life, that's enough for me.

Lorraine, she reminds me so much of Monty; the moment he feels managed, he’s out. It’s a tough balance when you care so much, but she seems to flourish most when she’s just allowed to exist alongside you without any expectations. I suspect the less she feels 'held,' the more she’ll choose to stay.

Yes! We have the independents too, but have to press on to make sure the fascists' voter suppression tactics fail hard.

Aww, Floofles ftw! And Lolo for the cat whisperer prize! 🏆😘

So true, Independents are turning on them along with the Hispanic voters too they assumed they owned forever. Stupid.

Donnie is building a bridge to the 12th century. Thinning the herd is part of the plan. But I've got news for these barbarians. We're not going anywhere! Floofles has now officially chosen you as family. She's a tough little kitty, like my semi-ferule Shadow. It was warm in Columbus this week, so I was able to hit some golf balls. It did wonders for my state of mind. Be well, and work on your short game and putting.😀😽

Lorraine Evanoff's avatar

Perfectly said, Charles. They're culling the herd, their own even more than ours due to anti-vax idiocy. Floofles is my family indeed. I'd love to see your feral, Shadow is such a great name! Good job getting out on the golf course. Very healthy activity.

"Instead of dealing with affordability and healthcare, the GOP is threatening our lives. Not only with DHS, ICE, Border Patrol, and war with Iran. But also, with disease and starvation. Enhanced subsidies for Obamacare have expired, (although 10 blue states continue to at least partially fund tax credits). Insurance premiums have increased 114% and prescription drug prices are skyrocketing, while Affordable Care Act sign-ups are tanking. The uninsured rate, financial hardship, and strain on hospitals are surging. To pay for food and rent, 200,000 people PER DAY are donating blood." - L E

Good Day Eh,

The Fascist Playbook 101 exercised by the GOP is deliberate with malice aforethought.

The interplay between healthcare accessibility, economic hardship, and authoritarianism has become increasingly evident, particularly in recent political actions by the GOP. As subsidies for programs like Obamacare expire and insurance premiums escalate, many Americans face profound financial distress that renders healthcare and basic necessities unattainable. This scenario mirrors patterns historically associated with authoritarian regimes, where the neglect of basic needs fosters an environment of suffering and control.

Healthcare Access and Economic Stress

The expiration of enhanced subsidies for Obamacare has resulted in significant increases in insurance premiums, with reports indicating rises of up to 114%. As more individuals find healthcare unattainable, the uninsured rate surges. Essential services dwindle, placing additional strain on hospitals and communities already grappling with economic pressures. For instance, many hospitals report an increase in unpaid medical debts as patients are unable to cover skyrocketing costs. Such a trend complicates delivery systems, often leading to overcrowded emergency rooms as individuals forgo preventative care due to financial constraints.

In authoritarian contexts, health systems are often disinvested, leading to similar results where only those with affluence can afford adequate care. The erosion of supportive structures contrasts sharply with the promises of systems designed to safeguard health as a basic right. Historically, when governments do not prioritize health access, the ramifications can lead to widespread public discontent, but they may also serve to solidify power through control of resources and information.

Social Stratification

Economic inequalities often widen in times of distress. Current trends show financial hardship pushing 200,000 people daily to donate blood to cover basic living expenses. This alarming statistic highlights a troubling disregard for individual welfare, reminiscent of strategies employed by authoritarian regimes to manipulate populations and consolidate control. Such actions can be seen as a desperate measure for survival, indicating that many individuals are forced into compromising positions due to systemic failures.

Moreover, studies indicate that broadened disparities are not merely a coincidence of economic turmoil but often a direct outcome of policy decisions that prioritize profit over welfare. Authoritarian regimes frequently exploit these inequalities, employing mechanisms that deepen class divisions and utilize marginalized populations as scapegoats. This systematic manipulation reinforces a cycle of dependency and control, inhibiting social mobility and fostering resentment.

Fear and Manipulation

The prevalent narrative of threats—ranging from external war to domestic immigration concerns—creates a climate of fear that often leads to the acceptance of aggressive governmental measures. By framing crises as existential threats, these governments divert attention from their governance failures and justify oppressive practices as necessary for public safety.

Historically, authoritarian governments have capitalized on societal fears to consolidate their power. A parallel can be drawn to the current political atmosphere, where fears surrounding immigration and national security are regularly invoked to legitimize increasingly repressive policies. This tactic allows governing bodies to sideline critical issues like economic inequity and healthcare access, directing public discourse toward divisive issues that reinforce the status quo.

Long-Term Political Strategies

Movements like Project 2025 signal intentions to reshape governance structures, frequently sidelining public welfare in favor of consolidating power. This initiative reflects a broader trend where political parties prioritize the interests of a few over the collective needs of society. As essential services become increasingly privatized or diminished, the most vulnerable populations are left to fend for themselves.

This approach exacerbates vulnerabilities in communities already strained by economic and health crises. Parallels can be drawn to authoritarian tactics that prioritize regime stability over citizen well-being, creating an environment where dissent is not only silenced but deemed unnecessary.

Correlational Evidence

Numerous studies and articles illustrate that the erosion of public health services and the rise in inequality are often signs of declining democratic norms. Authoritarian regimes tend to suppress dissent through economic hardship and healthcare crises, limiting citizens’ capacity to challenge governance. This suppression often creates a cyclical pattern where the populace, unable to voice dissent, becomes increasingly disenfranchised.

In examining these systemic patterns, it becomes clear that the deliberate mismanagement of public goods and services serves a dual purpose: it consolidates power while diverting focus from governmental failures. As healthcare access deteriorates, citizens are left with little choice but to comply with the frameworks being imposed upon them.

Conclusion

The current landscape, marked by escalating healthcare costs, socioeconomic disparities, and a retrenchment of essential services, reveals a disturbing trend resonating with authoritarian practices. As the GOP navigates these complex issues, the connections between public policy, health access, and authoritarianism become increasingly pronounced. This necessitates a close examination of how governance affects the lived experiences of citizens.

The intersection of economic strain and healthcare access poses significant challenges, echoing historical patterns seen in authoritarian contexts where individuals are systematically deprived of their rights and well-being. Urgent action is needed to address these critical issues and safeguard public welfare. Failure to do so may lead not only to a deterioration of health outcomes but also to a further entrenchment of authoritarian principles that prioritize control over the fundamental rights of individuals. Vote Blue, For the Dog Catcher too. Never, Ever Give In.

Wow very thorough analysis, SW. Love see you here!

100% correct your statement below. Project 2025 covers every possible way of taking away safety nets, health security, maximizing class divisions. And they relish the suffering they cause. Republicans are pure evil. They will pay dearly.

Love Floofies! I have fed feral cats as well-now in a condo I still enjoy the cat down the hall who likes to come in and visit all by herself! The owner leaves her door ajar some evenings for her!:)

Excellent piece, Lorraine. One suggestion though- look to the Independent vote. That third chorus is the plurality. Some, most likely those mostly untouched by Trump’s Big Brutal Bill, will vote their assets over issues like child rape, RFK, Jr and his coke toilet seat exploits and the rest of this unfuckingbelievale crew of pervs, thieves, nazis and lunatics. But I wager the majority will vote straight Blue. I have no proof, just a gut feeling. Too many lines crossed - at last. But keep your outrage. You have that power and authority.

Best wishes coaxing Floofies indoors. She may be ready to retire to a softer life.

Lorraine Evanoff's avatar

Thanks, Carol. Last I've seen, the GOP are hemorrhaging independent voters along with Hispanic voters. I don't think there are that many Independents in the top 10% wealthy. But I could be wrong.

Lorraine Evanoff: Floofles has a beautiful relationship with you, all determined on the deliberative, feline time scale.

Today‘s situation that is front and center is State sponsored murder and kidnapping.

At 78, I really don‘t expect to live long enough to return our Nation to the values of peaceful nonviolence and civil disobedience of W.E.B Du Bois, the NAACP and Dr. Martin Luther King.

These are our inspirations and ethics.

How, oh how did America sink so very low.

In light of other commentators, let me emphasize: Courageous, Open Opposition, with all means necessary within the heritage of nonviolence, peaceful resistance, respect for each human life, also within the bounds of law and morality with special reference to the teachings of Henry David Thoreau, Leo Tolstoy, WEB Du Bois, Dr King, and John Lewis, „Good Trouble.“ This is who we are.

And we are not going away.
