The plot against America

Spoiler alert if you plan to read Philip Roth’s 2004 prescient novel, “The Plot Against America.” Based on real events, Roth lays out an alternate WWII scenario in which FDR and Congressional Democrats lose the 1940 elections to Charles Lindbergh and Republicans.
The parallels to today include a compromised charismatic leader (Lindbergh), enabled by a compliant Republican party, a few corrupt Democrats, and a Jewish leader, (all real people). The new leadership’s “America First” agenda is to keep the United States from entering the war, with the real goal being a hate-fueled pogrom and global consolidation of Rightwing power.
Spoiler, Roth’s premise is that Lindberg and his wife are controlled by Hitler, in a long-term heartbreakingly evil scheme that forces Lindbergh to side with him. Contrast that with today’s Republican party controlled by Putin. The difference being that Trump is a willing Russian asset, supported by a confederacy of Republican Russian assets, a few corrupt Democrats, and even a criminal Jewish leader, (Netanyahu).
If this sounds crazy, consider the facts. During the 2012 presidential debates, Mitt Romney said, “Russia is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe.” He was ridiculed on the principle that al Qaeda was our greatest foe. Fast forward to 2016, and the systematic takeover of the Republican party by foreign enemy, Vladimir Putin. In June, Trump forced the RNC to remove Ukraine protections from its platform. In November, Russian interference gave Trump the win.
Another difference is, at the end of “The Plot,” after Roth’s BIG REVEAL, America wakes up and goes back to normal. So, where is our BIG REVEAL? What caused the Republican party to go from, “Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” to “Everything is on the table with Vladimir Putin”? What does Putin have over the GOP? Why haven’t Democrats ever subpoenaed Romney about his 2012 claim?
The truth started to come out with the 2023 indictment of Trump under the Espionage Act for stealing classified documents. Then “randomly” selected corrupt Florida Judge Cannon delayed the case. Russia interfered in the 2024 elections (assisted by Elon Musk), giving Trump the win AGAIN, and Project 2025 began.
But like “The Plot,” Democrats have held steady. The courts have been guardrails against Republican lawlessness, forcing Trump to walk back threats to defy court orders. Prosecutors are resigning rather than comply with corrupt case dismissals. Democrats are holding loud anti-Trump protests, and winning elections. All of this is drawing attention to huge GOP scandals, which will impede Trump’s corrupt agenda. Just today, Trump is reversing “accidental” government lay-offs.
In total darkness, we look for the light. We must keep shining the light. Hold steady until America wakes up from this nightmare.

"The Plot Against America" is prescient and was very emotional to read.
As it was, with FDR, we had internment camps.
Irony: As in a broken clock is right twice a day, no other than John Edgar Hoover (from 1919-1972 at the FBI head!!) had OPPOSED the internments.
This is the same Edgar Hoover who a score of years later tried to induce Dr. Martin Luther King to commit suicide and who fought against the Civil Rights Movement as if it were somehow sympathetic to Communism.
The difference between the "Plot Against America" and today's reality is that in the novel, as if by a deus ex machina, the ship of state righted itself and FDR became president again and history ended up on the right side.
I wish today's history were written by a master like Philip Roth.

We will keep the battle for humane values and the dignity of each human person, very much including our immigrants.
We will fight for LGBTQ rights.
We will fight for the rights of women. The rights of women bring life and joy and freedom to us all.
At this point, as we're being buffeted about rather mercilessly, it's extremely important we, each and every one of us, clench our teeth strongly and tell ourselves, "Steady as she goes." This is a violent storm we're suddenly inside of. Our democracy, our ship, is swaying & the storm is a truly heavy, even frightening, one. But our ship is strong...very, very strong and extraordinarily supple. Survival of the fittest has always been a survival of the most adaptable. Democracy is being battered by a rigid, unyielding force and in nature, such unyielding, rigid forces are the ones that snap. Our ship will survive this and so will we. The storm will abate. Have Faith! Steady as she goes!
