Lorraine Evanoff: I have read most of the work of Philip Roth.

"The Plot Against America" is prescient and was very emotional to read.

As it was, with FDR, we had internment camps.

Irony: As in a broken clock is right twice a day, no other than John Edgar Hoover (from 1919-1972 at the FBI head!!) had OPPOSED the internments.

This is the same Edgar Hoover who a score of years later tried to induce Dr. Martin Luther King to commit suicide and who fought against the Civil Rights Movement as if it were somehow sympathetic to Communism.

The difference between the "Plot Against America" and today's reality is that in the novel, as if by a deus ex machina, the ship of state righted itself and FDR became president again and history ended up on the right side.

I wish today's history were written by a master like Philip Roth.

You make very important points.

Lorraine: You and I will keep up the fight;

We will be seen.

We will be heard.

We will oppose.

We will group together.

We will not disappear.

We will not back down.

We will keep the battle for humane values and the dignity of each human person, very much including our immigrants.

We will fight for LGBTQ rights.

We will fight for the rights of women. The rights of women bring life and joy and freedom to us all.

Yes Armand! We will write the ending to our own story. We will not back down.

And you are so right, we're right back to Hoover at the FBI head. The horror!

At this point, as we're being buffeted about rather mercilessly, it's extremely important we, each and every one of us, clench our teeth strongly and tell ourselves, "Steady as she goes." This is a violent storm we're suddenly inside of. Our democracy, our ship, is swaying & the storm is a truly heavy, even frightening, one. But our ship is strong...very, very strong and extraordinarily supple. Survival of the fittest has always been a survival of the most adaptable. Democracy is being battered by a rigid, unyielding force and in nature, such unyielding, rigid forces are the ones that snap. Our ship will survive this and so will we. The storm will abate. Have Faith! Steady as she goes!

I read it when it came out as I did with all Roth's books. "The Plot Against America" frightened me so much that I refused to watch the TV series mini-series. A much more humorous, satirical vision of this future was Walker Percy's "Love in the Ruins," (1971), in which the Republican Party goes through a schism, and is dominated by the Christian Conservative Constitutional Party, aka The Knotheads, because they were too dumb to notice their initials stood for CCCP, the Cyrilic moniker of the USSR--then the "enemy."

Wow, Wayne, history really does repeat itself.

I just read The Plot for an awesome Fighting Fascism women's book club that my friend started. It's the first of four books we're reading, based on the DC book store Politics & Prose course (link below).

Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here" is next.

I hesitated with this book club because what's going on has been so stressful. But in fact it was somehow reassuring to realize that we have been through this before.

In fact, apparently Roth wrote "The Plot" because of what was happening with the GOP under GW Bush admin.

This is chilling, Lorraine. Unfortunately, I’m having a hard time “holding steady.” We need to act but I’m at a loss as to what that entails. Great piece. I’ve not read this book, but will.

Trump’s handpicked FBI chief is coming for law enforcement. If four Senate Republicans don’t step up, democracy may not survive. They’re voting on Tuesday. This article breaks down the urgent threat and the last chance to stop it—before it’s too late.

Would love to hear your thoughts when you have a minute.

Thanks for sharing your Substack, Jason. Subscribed!

You state all the well-researched facts beautifully. They problem is the compromised GOP in intent on confirming all the evil cabinet nominees. It's insane.

The only thing that will stop this regime now is calling out their corruption and incompetence and using a bull horn on it in the midterm elections.

I'm looking forward to reading your future posts!

"This was Patel’s entire mission: to discredit law enforcement when it was investigating people he wanted to protect. Not because the investigations were improper. Not because they were politically motivated. But because they were politically inconvenient."

Ray Horvath: Actually, I think Lorraine Evanoff does carefully and correctly summarize Philip Roth.

Very much, Charles Lindbergh's policies, as President, in the Novel, were done in careful consultation with Goering and others.

Yes, it's all so well researched, I love how Roth didn't bother changing names of all those who were totally fine with Hitler.

Lorraine Evanoff: Philip Roth received a lot of criticism. He did not win the Nobel Literature Prize, which he had yearned for.

But lack of candor or directness was NOT among his faults.

To be clear: Your post today is EXCELLENT and ON POINT!!

I am proud to be part of the same team.

I'm getting to you late. (Snow removal responsibilities) The America First movement before WWII was supported by the German foreign ministry and the Abwher ( German military intelligence). As well as Limberg, there was Joe Kennedy, Henry Ford, Prescott Bush, and many others. FDR's political skill and Pearl Harbor stopped it.

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

In the movie Field of Dreams, Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, played by Burt Lancaster, says:

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

"You know, we just don't recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then, I thought, well, there'll be other days. I didn't realize that was the only day."

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Right now, we are failing to recognize one of the most significant moments in our nation's history. We might think, "There’ll be other days, other opportunities to address this." But what we don’t see is that this is the only day, the day a bloodless digital coup is quietly reshaping our nation while Congress and the Supreme Court fail to recognize it for what it truly is.

Thanks for this insight James.

It's so weird the timing of @Heidi_Cuda's piece today. She exactly answers my question about Mitt Romney's 2012 statement.

It's all suddenly making sense!

"Russian money plowed into Silicon Valley, into the hands of the ‘PayPal Mafia’ and how Russia’s favorite Congressman Dana Rohrabacher helped Elon Musk privatize space.

“Folks connected with the Council for National Policy (CNP) that includes the Mercers, and the Kochs, coordinated a variety of campaigns in coordination with a variety of entities in Russia that are connected to the Kremlin to advance traditional values.

“A lot of the people involved with CNP got involved with a group called the World Congress of Families that was put together in the mid-90s by an American visiting Russia, who realised that traditional family values were something that would unite the East and the West, Russia and the United States.”

By 2011, the World Congress of Families started scheduling their meetings in Russia.

“You ended up with all these traditional family organisations traveling to Russia on a repeated basis,” Troy explained…

“So these folks went from being virulently anti-USSR to being pro-Russia because they saw Putin’s network as being capitalistic, aligned with the Orthodox Church, and pro-family...everything aligns.

The bigger picture of American and Russian moralists trying to overthrow democracy actually makes sense.”
